Federal Minister of Transport Scheuer presents the latest generation of bus retrofit
Federal Minister of Transport Andreas Scheuer and NRW Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser had the latest generation of SCR retrofit technology with active thermo-management explained to them in great detail in the real installation at the HJS site in Duesseldorf. The occasion was perfectly fitting – the presentation of the package of measures of Duesseldorf Rheinbahn for the reduction of real emissions.
- HJS and Rheinbahn realise environmentally-friendly buses
- Older buses are provided with emission Level Euro VI
- Andreas Scheuer: Retrofitting buses makes sense
Clean buses, clean cities – Retrofitting buses makes sense
“This will significantly improve the air in Duesseldorf”, stated Minister Scheuer on Friday (20.07.2018) at the Burgplatz in Duesseldorf: “Our clear objective is: No general driving bans in German cities. Therefore, retrofitting will take place where it makes sense. Therefore, it’s not old private diesel cars, rather public transport buses which travel thousands of kilometres in the inner cities daily. For this reason, the Federal Government supports the transport companies in making their fleets environmentally-friendlier with the retrofit of exhaust gas treatment systems.
Why the retrofit is effective
How the effectiveness of the retrofit is assured is illustrated clearly by the HJS company owner Hermann Josef Schulte in Duesseldorf: “The retrofit of buses with HJS technology is based on the SCRT® technology, as it is also used in new Euro VI buses. For the conversion of nitrogen oxides, the operating material AdBlue® is added to the exhaust gas. This reacts with the nitrogen oxides to produce harmless nitrogen and water vapour. The system requires a certain temperature, however, which is not always securely reached by buses in real city operation. Vehicle manufacturers solve this problem with vehicles of generation Euro VI through engine thermo-management: The engine generates the required exhaust gas temperature in a targeted way, where this is not possible in the retrofit, therefore we bring the temperature actively into the system.” The active thermo-management of HJS ensures, by means of two networked electrical actuators that the best-possible NOx reduction is always realised in the SCR catalyzer – without having any influence on the engine. As a result of the combined employment of particle filter and SCR technology with active thermo-management, HJS guarantees a maximum level of exhaust gas cleaning. “We have industrial property rights here – and as a Mittlelstand (medium sized) company we are proud of this” said Schulte.
A “subject dear to the heart” of the NRW Environment Minister
NRW Environment Minister Ursula Heinen-Esser (CDU) clearly stated that “We in NRW are leading with retrofits here.” The retrofit is a “subject dear to her heart” she stated in Duesseldorf. Therefore, be glad about the fast, practical application in the area of public transport buses: Rheinbahn in Duesseldorf is converting their bus fleet to the environmentally-friendly VI Euro Standard. By the end of the year 2020, the transport company wants to have retrofitted or replaced all older buses.
The Federal Government is supporting retrofits with Euro 107 million
The Federal Transport Department is supporting municipalities Germany-wide with Euro 107 million so that they can retrofit their diesel buses. The promotion is implemented within the immediate program “Clean Air”. From the whole of Germany, applications to date have come in for almost 1,000 buses with a delivery volume of approximately Euro 8.5 million, stated the Federal Ministry.
Systems are available directly
The system presented by HJS for the MAN bus family of the generation Euro V / EEV meets the promotion directives published by the Federal Transport Department, within the framework of the “Immediate Program Clean Air”, and is available immediately, other versions for other bus manufacturers will follow in the second half of the year, Daimler/ EvoBus included in the short term.
