Menden, August 2017 – Some Cities threaten that only vehicles with a blue plaque may enter the inner city. A lot of things are not decided yet, however, owners of mobile homes with diesel drive should think of the future.
- In cities and population centres, nitrogen oxide limit values are being exceeded.
- Result: Driving bans are threatened!
- Technically possible: SCR (AdBlue) retrofit for mobile homes.
- Retrofitting solutions from HJS and KLS, the specialist for special structures.
For motor-homes with diesel drive, up to and including the exhaust gas standard Euro 5, some cities could become taboo zones as early as in the coming year. Exceeded nitrogen oxide limit values could lead to stricter directives, not only in Stuttgart, but also in population centres and in cities such as Duesseldorf, Munich, Cologne or Hamburg.
Complex political situation
Will older diesel mobile homes therefore soon be banned from German inner cities? The situation is complicated and highly incendiary politically. Stuttgart and Munich threaten that any entry into these cities with a diesel vehicle could only be possible with a blue plaque. The blue plaque should indicate vehicles with low nitrogen oxide emission. However, this can only be introduced by the Federal Transport Department, which is currently sceptical of the blue plaque at a minimum.
Right to clean air as an instruction
It is not yet clear how strictly possible diesel drive bans could be applied. Nevertheless, owners of diesel mobile homes should be aware that discussions are ongoing and are also scheduled in future about the blue plaque and health-endangering nitrogen oxides.
Discussion about blue plaque and nitrogen oxides
According to the view of the German Cities Convention, however also the Federal Office for Environment Protection, the blue plaque would be an appropriate and easily realisable measure in order to provide for cleaner air. If the blue plaque should in fact come, mobile homes with diesel drive, including the exhaust gas standard Euro 5, do not absolutely have to be made obsolete.
Solution: Blue upgrade – retrofit with SCR technology (Adblue)
“There is a technical solution for mobile homes and it is the blue upgrade” states Wolfgang Krause, an engine construction engineer, Managing Director of the company KLS Reisemobiltechnik from Rheurdt in the Lower-Rhine. HJS, as an expert in the sector exhaust gas cleaning, has already been offering SCR retrofits for many years e.g. for public transport buses. This technical solution can be adapted to the transporter/ motor-home vehicle class in the short term. “Retrofitting is always more economical than a new purchase” explains Krause. As soon as the corresponding legal framework and binding limit values are stipulated, things can get going. The discussed blue plaque might then be the measure of all things.
Individual solutions for motor-homes and special vehicles
HJS and KLS are best expanding with the retrofit of mobile homes and special vehicles: “As a result of the individual construction design of these vehicles, a standard retrofit is generally not possible without further outlay” states Krause. The companies jointly offer a vehicle-specific solution.
A new purchase is not an option for many mobile home lovers
So that diesel mobile homes can be provided with the currently valid green plaque, HJS currently supplies the matching filter system which is then installed in the KLS specialist workshop: “A lot of these vehicles are collector items, or indicate only a very low kilometre reading. A new purchase is often simply not an option” states Philipp Schulte, member of the HJS Company Management. “Therefore, it was a special concern for us to develop modular component solutions also adapted to these vehicles”. KLS is the correct professional partner for a retrofit. “Here, two specialists are extending themselves exceptionally within their sectors”, added Schulte.
Green plaque through retrofit even for niche types
HJS and KLS also offer the matching solutions for four-wheel drive cars, mobile handlers and further special vehicles. Especially comfortable: The holder can fetch their vehicle after the retrofit, including the green plaque, so that the registration is taken over directly.
Joint presentation at Caravan Salon in Duesseldorf
HJS Emission Technology (Menden, Sauerland) and KLS Reisemobiltechnik (Rheurdt, Lower-Rhine) jointly present their products and solutions on 25th August to the 3rd September 2017 at the Caravan Salon in Duesseldorf (Hall A, Stand A93).
